Plumbing Noises to Listen For

Whether you live in an old house or a new one, your house makes noises. Some of these noises come from parts of the house that are slowly shifting due to external forces like wind, which you can disregard. Other noises, like plumbing noises, should not be ignored because they can indicate serious problems.

What noises should get your attention when it comes to plumbing sounds? Here are some of the more common plumbing noises you might hear in your home and what they may indicate:

Plumbing Noises to Listen For

  • Shaking - If you hear a loud shaking noise coming from within your walls and caused by your pipes, you will want to do something about it. Shaking noises indicate that your pipes have either come loose from their mounting straps and need to be tightened or your mounting straps have actually worn away and need replacing.
  • Banging – One of the more common sounds that people hear when it comes to plumbing noises is banging. This banging noise is called a water hammer and this happens when water pressure is too high. The sudden closing of a faucet or a valve can cause the banging noise to occur. This can damage pipes and should be addressed with the installation of an air chamber; by reducing water pressure with the help of a pressure regulator; or by installing water arrestors.
  • Hissing – When you hear hissing sounds coming from your pipes, this can indicate that you have a leak in your pipe and the hissing noise is actually water escaping through the leaks. Another reason why your pipes may hiss is because of excess water pressure causing the noise. If you have a leak, a plumber should be called to find it and fix it. If it is a problem with water pressure, a pressure regulator should be installed.
  • Screeching – Faucets that screech when you open them usually means that your faucets are defective or have a loose part in it. The best solution for this problem is to simply replace the faulty faucet.
  • Gurgling – When the drains in your home make a gurgling sound, this usually tells you that there is a clog somewhere in your sewage system. The solution to this problem is venting your drains or installing new drain vents.
